How to Turn Your Manuscript Into a Graphic Novel (Without Drawing a Single Panel)

What actually happens when you upload a manuscript

Most writers assume adapting a book into a graphic novel means hiring an illustrator, a letterer, and a designer — and budgeting a year for it. The premise of Novvel is that the manuscript itself already contains almost everything an adaptation needs: the cast, the locations, the beats, the dialogue. The platform reads your prose and drafts the visual version of it, stage by stage, while you watch.

The flow, end to end:

  • Upload or paste your story. A .txt, .md or .pdf — any length, any genre. Title and author are the only required fields; genre, audience, themes and text style can be set by you or inferred from the manuscript itself.

  • The build runs in the open. Cast portraits form from silhouettes, locations resolve, story beats get planned, and covers are painted — with a live stage-by-stage feed rather than a spinner. You get an email the moment your cover is ready.

  • Nothing renders until you approve. Cast, locations and style are three explicit sign-offs. Edit any character by describing the change — “change the dress colour to green” — and pick your look from ranked finalists matched to your story, a catalog of millions, or your own reference.

  • Every page gets scripted and drawn. Panels, narration and dialogue are generated act by act, tagged by shot type, and editable the same conversational way.

  • Lay out and ship. A real page editor for panels, balloons and spreads, then a read-anywhere link or a print-ready PDF at up to 300 DPI.

What you keep

Your manuscript remains yours — uploading grants a limited licence to adapt it, nothing more. The finished graphic novel vests in you on payment, with full commercial rights on Pro: publish it on Amazon KDP or IngramSpark, sell it at conventions, license it onward. The only asks are a small adaptation credit and the “Made with Novvel” mark on shared reader pages. The details live in our Terms of Service.

Where to start

The free preview is the honest test: upload your story and see your cover, your characters and your opening pages before paying anything. If the preview reads like your book, the rest of the process will too. Browse the library to see finished adaptations across genres first — every one of them started as prose.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need drawing or design experience?

None. The adaptation — panel breakdown, illustration, lettering, layout — is generated from your prose. Your job is judgement: approving the cast, choosing the style, and refining panels by describing changes.

How long is the process?

The build runs in staged phases and emails you at key moments — your preview and cover typically land the same day you upload, and you review chapter by chapter from there.

Can I sell the result?

On Pro, yes — full commercial rights, no royalties owed. On Lite, books are for personal use, upgradeable to Pro later by paying the difference.

What formats can I publish in?

A shareable web reader link that works on any phone, and PDF export at Draft 100 / Standard 150 / High 200 / Print Ready 300 DPI.
